This September, I’m joining an army: 5000+ SickKids supporters rallying together at a new fundraising event for SickKids, GetLoud. $2.5 million is our collective fundraising goal. We’re building a new SickKids, and it’s going to take all of us.
2019 has been a tough year for our family. Just shy of Emma's 5th birthday she underwent open heart surgery to fix the hole in her heart. A surgery that would take 5 long hours and weeks of healing. Emma faced it like the true warrior she is. She blew our minds by how quickly she recovered and once again taught us a valuable lesson on perspective.
As a family we saw firsthand what makes SickKids so great and what needs to change. All of the staff at SickKids are amazing (nurses, volunteers, Dr's). The facility itself does not hold the same standard. For 5 long hours we sat in a windowless waiting room, with ripped chairs and broken TV's. Only to share an ICU room with three other patients. Sectioned off by red tape and sound blocking headphones when they discuss other patients. From there Emma was placed in a step down ward with four other babies. Babies that have been in the cardio ward since the day they were born.
We didn’t sleep much in the hospital and thankfully were there for a short period of time. We were emotionally exhausted and dealing with a child in a lot of pain. A child that could not wait to go home. I often think of the other families that have to share such a personal and draining time in such a crowded space for weeks, months, years. How exhausting that would be in an already unimaginable situation. All of this because the facility is at its capacity and they have no other choice.
This year will be our third year walking for a new SickKids. We have a lot more to be thankful for this year and want to give back to a place that gave us Emma back. Emma will never be the same after her stay at SickKids. She has a new warrior scar on her chest that will become her forever story. However, her story has an amazing ending. Lets make sure many, many more children have the same ending.
Help me unleash the full potential of SickKids by donating online – it’s safe, secure and easy. Any amount you give today will help me reach my fundraising goal.
Let’s rally, march, and celebrate. When we unite in the fight against limits at SickKids, we’re unstoppable.
