The Bug Bandits
I am 9 and a half years old and my whole life is planned around stays in hospital. That is pretty crappy but it never makes me crabby. I have some of the smartest people in the world trying to figure out how they can keep me out of SickKids hospital but in the meantime, I keep mustering along, making the best of my stays.
This past year has been the hardest journey for me yet. After quite a few admissions in 2018, I thought we had turned a corner and my days in hospital were behind me. But in January of 2019, I got really sick and spent over 5 months in the hospital. My body was sick but my mind sure wasn't, and the staff made certain it stayed that way. Doctors and nurses helped to keep me comfortable while clowns and therapists made sure my mischevious self had things to do. I made TV shows, performed teddy-ectomies and I even took over social media for the hospital!
The staff continuously advocate for helping Sick Kids patients feel like normal kids while they receive world class treatments to help them get home. But one day, while wheeling through the halls with my mom, we noticed that some of the doorways are so narrow, it makes it hard for wheelchairs to get through them, let alone mobile ultrasounds or xray machines. We learned that in some units of the hospital, kids have to share bathrooms or don't have the privacy they need to get through highly stressful days. That's wild because SickKids has some of the best, high tech equipment out there but are limited in how they can use it because of the old facilities. I've said it before and I'll say it again;
We can't fix all diseases, but we can fix buildings.
So let's do it!!!!!!
This September, I am turning 10 and to mark my first decade as a superhero, I am once again participating in SickKids GetLoud campaign to help raise over $2.5m in funds for a new facility. Please sponsor my walk and help me reach my fundraising goal, so I can rally for kids for like me.
Donating online is easy - it's safe and secure. Any amount you give today will help me reach my goal.
I have witnessed the kindness and support of total strangers over the last 6 months and I know that when we unite in the fight against limits at SickKids, we're unstoppable!!!!
